The vast Republic of Kazakhstan is virtually the largest landlocked country in the world. Located in the central part of Asia, Kazakhstan’s neighboring counties include China, Russia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan. With a land area of 2,727,300 square km, Kazakhstan is ranked as the world’s ninth largest country.

With its immense territory, the country is abundant with raw materials, around 3% of the world’s total. It also has a natural resource base that is equivalent to more than $300,000 per capita. Kazakhstan also has an enormous amount of oil reserves. The country’s oil reserves on both onshore and offshore fields are estimated to go around 9 billion and 17.6 billion barrels, greater than that of Iran. Kazakhstan gathers its fossil fuels from four major oil fields, the Kashagan, Karachaganak, Uzen, and Tengiz.

Aside from fossil fuels, Kazakhstan is also the world’s largest producer of uranium. For 2009 alone, the country produced around 25% of the world’s total uranium supply. Kazakhstan is also a major producer and exporter of grain and provides a bulk of some of the world’s minerals reserves. The country has 4% of the world’s iron and chrome reserves, as well as 8% of the world’s total zinc reserves.

In terms of population, Kazakhstan has the 62nd largest population in the world. The country has a total population of 16.2 million people and a population density of 15 people per sq. mi.

The country’s overall population is a mixture of more than 100 ethnic groups following over 40 different types of religions. Aside from its diversity and rich culture, a whopping 97% of Kazakhs have access to adequate sanitation systems. Kazakhstan ranks 8th worldwide for its ratio of hospital beds, nurses and doctors available per capita.

The country is ranked as the 42nd country in terms of education. It has a literacy rate of 99.7%. Finally, a large percentage of the country’s total number of average workers has been through or has acquired secondary education.
